Gun Mayhem

Gun Mayhem (often searched as gunmayhem) is a loud little arena brawler dressed as a 2D platform shooter. You do not win by emptying a traditional health bar. Damage builds a knockback meter: the more you are hit, the farther the next blast sends you, until someone flies off the floating stage. Rounds are short, crates keep changing the gun in your hands, and one bad step near the edge can end a strong start.

Kevin Gu and Arvin Eksiri released Gun Mayhem in June 2011. The browser formula still holds: Campaign for AI missions (with optional co-op), Custom Game for local multiplayer and rule presets, plus a loadout screen for hats, shirts, handguns, and perks before you drop in. Desktop keyboard play is the clearest way to handle jumps, shots, and bombs when the arena gets crowded.

Knockback is the real win condition

Plenty of shooters only care about emptying a life bar. Gunmayhem cares about where that damage sends you. Every hit raises how far the next blast will throw a fighter. A chip shot in the middle might only nudge someone. The same shot near the rim can finish the round.

That rule changes how you aim. You are not only hunting kills. You are hunting bad footing. Push a rival toward the drop, watch their damage climb, then spend the strong crate gun or bomb when they have nowhere left to recover.

Campaign grind vs Custom Game chaos

  • Campaign is the mission ladder against AI. Clear a map, unlock the next one, and expect bots that move faster and carry nastier guns later on. Co-op here means a second player joins you against the bots.
  • Custom Game is the local multiplayer sandbox. You can set rules, fill seats with friends, and try formats such as Last Man Standing, One Shot One Kill, Gun Game, or Duck Defense when the build lists them.
  • One to four players on the same keyboard keeps the classic couch feeling. Separate control sets keep each fighter independent once the match starts.

Both paths use the same arena knockback physics. The difference is whether you want a rising AI difficulty curve or a room full of people yelling about who stole the crate.

Loadouts, crates, and a huge gun pool

Before the fight you pick cosmetics and a starting handgun, then a perk that reshapes the first minute: speed for escapes, no recoil for cleaner sprays, extra ammo for longer pressure. During the fight, falling crates rewrite that plan. The game is known for a very large firearm pool across shotguns, rifles, machine guns, snipers, and specials, so learning a few favorites in the Gun Library beats spam firing every new drop.

Power ups such as shields or temporary boosts are worth a detour only when the path back to center stays open. A heavy blast near the edge can win the round for you or for the person who tagged you into your own explosion.

Habits that keep you on the platform

  • Own the middle. Center gives recovery room after a hit.
  • Keep moving. Still feet eat full magazines.
  • Finish high damage targets first. They fly farther.
  • Respect your own damage meter. Play ranged when you are fragile.
  • Bomb at distance. Close blasts launch everyone, including you.
  • Do not suicide dive a crate on the rim unless the round is already lost.

Most early losses in Gun Mayhem come from greed at the edge, not from weak aim. Survive the scramble, take the safe upgrade, then push when someone else is already hanging over the drop.
